Though this assignment, and through the contributions of my group members, I have been reminded the importance of context in reading. It was so beneficial to have some background knowledge of the story itself (through the little bit of reading I had done beforehand) as well as the country that acts as a backdrop to the story. Through looking up definitions and gaining more information about the situation in Afghanistan, I fell as though I have had a richer reading experience.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. Although it was not incredibly complicated to read, I felt that it had some really intense themes. I was intrigued by Parvana’s past as well as her future. I look forward to reading the other books in The Breadwinner series.
I think that the reading process that I went through while reading this book relates extremely closely to the reading instruction we have learned about in class. Things like I mentioned above such as vocabulary and context information are important to reading and reading instruction. The reading process during my reading of this book also sparked my interest into ways I could incorporate this novel into my classroom. On the teaching strategies page of our website, we have included a number of ways a teacher could encourage his or her students to respond to this text, which is an important part of reading instruction.
Although I am an English major (well general humanities, of which one stream is English), I have not always enjoyed reading. This experience reminded me that it is important to encourage students to read something they will enjoy. If a student is forced to read literature that they dislike, they will begin to associate reading with frustration and distaste, as I did. In this way, I think this reading experience has made me realize how important it is to allow students choice in their reading and to help them find something they enjoy reading!
One goal that I have set for myself is to develop a repertoire of novels that my students may be interested in. The more literature that I am aware of, the better I will be able to assist a student in possibly finding a book or genre that they will enjoy reading. I want to instill a joy and desire for reading in my future students.
