I feel strongly after reading this novel that many different groups of people can relate to Parvana and her story in some way. Girls could relate to the treatment of girls/women in regards to human rights or rights to education, adults could relate to the relationships between the Taliban, Afghanistan and the American Army that existed post 9-11, or students of any age could relate to Parvana’s more personal struggles in regards to sibling rivalry and her relationship with her parents. This reliability is due largely, in my opinion, to the fact that the book had enough serious moments and specific details that it could be studied on a deeper level with high school or adult levels while at the same time was relatable enough for children to enjoy and understand the main themes. The sheer versatility of the novel is astounding and speaks to Ellis’s abilities as an accomplished writer who is writing about topics she is obviously passionate about.
