In these chapters Parvana has managed to snag Jane Eyre and has found herself devouring its pages in the relative safety and solitude of her cell. The picture that Ellis describes is comforting. Parvana snuggles in her bed and nibbles a brownie while reading a book. When I was reading this I was doing much the same thing as Parvana, munching on a snack, reading a book. It created a weird sense of connection to Parvana to in essence share a moment with her. In the chapters that focus on the school, we see what a gift education is for Parvana and her peers. To be able to read and write is a privilege that the girls do NOT take for granted. This was a good reminder for me as both a student and a preservice teacher. I need to treasure the gift of education that I have been blessed with and promote a sense of gratitude in my some-day students for the blessings that they have been granted as well.
